Sure-Grip Boardwalk: A Good First Quad Skate?
Nicole Fiore, a roller skating coach who describes herself as a four-time world champion, skated a Sure-Grip Boardwalk for a few months in 2021 and called it a really great purchase for a beginner: comfortable, laces up like an everyday boot, light enough to pick your feet up easily, and sturdy enough to learn forward, backward, spins and one-foot tricks on; the pair was sent to her by an online shop whose affiliate code she shares, and she says the video is not paid. Be clear on the other side too: none of the twelve skaters and coaches in our buying-guide compilation recommends the Sure-Grip Boardwalk by name; she is the one recognised voice we found who does, and her reservations are real. It is on this site because beginners buy it in numbers. So instead of an endorsement, this page checks its published specs against what the coaches we compiled ask of a first quad skate. On paper it meets four of the five: a leather boot, outdoor-soft wheels in the size an instructor advises, and an adjustable toe stop. The one it misses is the plate, which is nylon rather than metal: the same thing Nicole Fiore tells beginners to upgrade when they can.

Why it is on this site: what “trending” means here
The Sure-Grip Boardwalk sat in the top thirty of Amazon.com’s own best-seller list for outdoor roller skates when we checked on 25 October 2026, and it is the skate Nicole Fiore says beginners hear recommended most. That is a measure of what buyers choose, not of quality. It is why the page exists; it is not why you should buy it.
How we evaluated it
We have not skated the Sure-Grip Boardwalk ourselves, and nobody tested it for this page. We took the criteria that the coaches and skaters in our buying-guide compilation give for a first quad skate, each with its source and date, and checked the published specs against them, one by one. Where a spec could not be confirmed, we say so below.
What people who skated it report
These are the reports we could find and read from people who say they actually skated it, with their limits. We did not use Amazon customer reviews, which Amazon does not allow sites to reproduce.
- Nicole Fiore, roller skating coach and choreographer who describes herself as a four-time world champion (about 80,000 YouTube subscribers), video of 2021 after a few months on the Boardwalk Pastel; the pair was sent by the online shop Volition Skate Co, whose affiliate code is in the description; she says the video is not paid. Suede boot that forms to the foot and breaks in without pain; thin padding at the sides, stiff at the heel: enough for beginner skills, too flimsy for deep edges. Nylon plate: light (2.8 lb against 3.6 for her everyday skates), easy to move, but she advises a metal plate when you can, since she would not jump hard or press deep edges on nylon. Aluminium trucks easy to adjust with a wrench; she loosened hers two clicks front and back. Stock 57 mm outdoor wheels work indoors once scuffed; outdoors she prefers a 65 mm wheel. Small toe stop, fine for stopping and pushing, wears fast if used hard. Fit: comfortable, laces like a boot, men’s sizing (she took a 4 against her 5-5½ shoe size), low heel. Verdict: a really great purchase for a beginner, sturdy enough for a long time, and she was comfortable skating forward, backward, spinning and on one foot in them (source, read 25 Oct 2026)
The specs against what coaches ask for
| What coaches ask of a first quad skate | Who says it | Sure-Grip Boardwalk |
|---|---|---|
| A firm, padded boot, ideally leather or suede | Lisa J (Boardwalk Skater, 2023); Dunbeezy, whose first check for a cheap skate is a leather boot (Dunbeezytv, 12 Aug 2024) | Meets it. Leather boot on the Amazon listing we link to (read 25 Oct 2026). Nicole Fiore’s 2021 pair, the Pastel version, had a suede boot that she found easy to break in, thin at the sides but stiff at the heel: enough support for beginner skills, too flimsy for deep edges |
| A metal plate (aluminium or magnesium), never plastic | Lisa J; Dunbeezy, second check | Misses it. Nylon “Rock” plate with aluminium trucks (listing). Nicole Fiore weighed her pair at 2.8 lb against 3.6 for her everyday skates, liked how light it felt, and still advises a metal plate when you can afford one: she did not feel comfortable jumping hard or pressing deep edges on nylon |
| Soft wheels outdoors, harder wheels indoors | Lisa J; Dirty Deborah Harry (Dirty School of Skate, 21 Jun 2022); Caro Hernandez, a Moxi rider, in a video published by Moxi (7 Oct 2020) | Meets it. 82A outdoor wheels (listing), inside the 78A-85A outdoor band the skater behind this site uses; Nicole Fiore says the stock wheels also work indoors once scuffed |
| 62-65 mm wheels for an adult beginner | Kelly, instructor at Skate Base London (9 Sep 2024) | Meets it. 62 mm on the listing we link to, 65 mm on the black and beige versions (listing). Note that Nicole Fiore’s 2021 pair came with 57 mm wheels and she advised a larger outdoor wheel: the current listing has already moved to the size Kelly advises |
| A height-adjustable toe stop rather than a fixed one | Dirty Deborah Harry; Dunbeezy, third check | Meets it. 5/8-inch adjustable rubber toe stop (listing). Nicole Fiore found the stop small: fine for ordinary stopping and pushing, quick to wear down if you push, spin or jump on it |
Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere
It suits a beginner who wants a leather-boot quad that is ready to skate out of the box, light on the foot, usable outdoors and indoors, and who is happy to upgrade the plate later rather than buy a heavier metal-plate skate now.
Look elsewhere if you already know you will jump, press deep edges or skate hard: the nylon plate is the part Nicole Fiore did not trust for that, and a metal-plate skate (Lisa J, Dunbeezy) is the safer buy from the start. If you have very wide feet, read our wide-feet guide first. If you have not chosen between quad and inline yet, start with quad vs inline: which to buy first.
Sizing
The listing sells unisex pairs labelled with a men’s size and a women’s size one number apart (a men’s 7 is a women’s 8). Nicole Fiore wears a women’s 5 to 5½ shoe and took a size 4 in the Boardwalk, so expect to go down one to one and a half sizes from a women’s shoe size. She also notes a low heel, which suits beginners used to flat shoes. See should you size up.
What we could not check
- Sure-Grip’s own product page was not read on 25 October 2026; the specs come from the Amazon listing we link to.
- Whether the Pastel version Nicole Fiore skated (suede boot, 57 mm wheels, 2021) and the current leather-boot, 62 mm listing share the same plate and trucks: the listing names a “Rock” nylon plate, she describes a nylon plate; we assume the same family, not the same part.
- Two other skaters’ videos found and not read on 25 October 2026: Karen the Karrot (one year of use, 2021) and CharlySkates (wide feet, 2025).

Questions
Is the Sure-Grip Boardwalk good for beginners?
On paper it meets four of the five checks the quad coaches in our compilation give: a leather boot (Dunbeezy, Lisa J), 82A outdoor wheels (Lisa J, Dirty Deborah Harry), 62-65 mm wheels (Kelly) and an adjustable toe stop (Dirty Deborah Harry). It misses the metal plate (Lisa J, Dunbeezy): the plate is nylon. Nicole Fiore, a coach and four-time world champion by her own account, calls it a really great purchase for a beginner after a few months on one; no skater in our compilation recommends it by name.
Is the Sure-Grip Boardwalk good for outdoor skating?
It is sold as an outdoor skate, with 82A wheels of 62 mm (65 mm on the black and beige versions). That is inside the soft, larger-wheel range Lisa J, Dirty Deborah Harry and Kelly advise for outdoors. Nicole Fiore skated hers both outside and on a rink floor.
Should I upgrade the plate on a Sure-Grip Boardwalk?
Not to start. Nicole Fiore skated beginner skills, spins and one-foot tricks on the nylon plate and found it light and easy; she advises a metal plate once you jump hard or press deep edges, which matches what Lisa J and Dunbeezy ask of a first skate. See aluminium vs nylon plates.
