The Cheapest Thing in a Skater's Bag Is a Ball

A certified coach ends her foot routine with a massage or myofascial ball rolled under the foot, to release the tension left by skating and to promote circulation. It costs less than anything else you own for skating, it lives in a bag, and it is used after the session rather than before. Nothing about it fixes a badly fitting boot — that is a separate problem with a separate answer. From ICP-certified coach Asha Kirkby.

The end of a certified coach's foot routine is not another exercise. It is an object, and it is the cheapest thing you will ever own for skating.

A massage or myofascial ball, rolled under the foot, to release the tension left by skating and to promote circulation. Slowly, under the arch and along the length of the sole, with as much or as little weight as you want to put on it.

It lives in the bag and it is used after, not before. Which is what makes it get used at all: the things we do before a skate compete with wanting to skate, and the things we do after compete with nothing.

What it does not do is fix a badly fitting boot. That is a separate problem with a separate answer, and rolling a ball under your arch will not make a skate that is too narrow become a skate that fits.

Technique from Asha Kirkby of Skatefresh, an instructor certified by the Inline Certification Program. She teaches inline skating, and that is the discipline this page is about.
