Why Your Skates Feel Awful Outside
Rink wheels are hard, around 95A and up, because polished floors are smooth. Pavement isn't. Soft outdoor wheels, 78A to 85A, absorb the grain instead of rattling through it. It's the cheapest upgrade in skating and the one nobody tells beginners about.
Wheel hardness is printed on the wheel as a number followed by A. Higher is harder. Rink wheels sit around 95A and up because a polished floor is already smooth and a hard wheel rolls faster on it.
Pavement has grain, and a hard wheel transmits every bit of it into your feet. Outdoor wheels of 78A to 85A deform slightly and absorb it, which is why the same skates feel like different skates once you swap.
This is the cheapest upgrade in skating and almost nobody mentions it to beginners. A set of soft wheels costs less than a month of rink entry, and it fits the skates you already own.
