Your Socks Are Doing More Than You Think

Socks must clear the top of the boot. Bare skin against a cuff becomes a raw stripe in about twenty minutes, and the heel is the first place a boot rubs - which is why plasters live permanently in a skate bag. What socks cannot fix is a boot that hurts because it is badly made, or one in the wrong size. Those are different problems wearing the same disguise.

Socks must clear the top of the boot. It sounds like a detail and it decides whether your session ends early.

Bare skin against a cuff becomes a raw stripe in about twenty minutes. The heel is the first place a boot rubs, which is why plasters live permanently in a skate bag rather than being something you remember to pack.

What socks cannot fix is worth knowing, because people buy socks hoping for it: a boot that hurts because it is badly made, and a boot that hurts because it is the wrong size. Cheap skates hurt new or worn in, and no amount of wearing them changes that.

Three different problems arrive wearing the same disguise — a foot that hurts after skating. Only one of them is solved by what you put on before the boot.
