The Slope You Wouldn't Notice on Foot

A grade so slight you'd walk it without thinking becomes uncontrollable on wheels. That is where beginners get caught: not on the obvious hill, but on the one they never registered as a hill. Knowing how to brake standing still is not the same as braking under stress, and the first time is always under stress. Walk a new route before you roll it.
The dangerous slope is rarely the obvious one. It is the grade so slight you would walk it without registering it as a hill at all — and on wheels it becomes something you cannot control.
This is why the trouble tends to find people on a route they thought was flat. Nobody commits to a wall of a hill by accident; plenty of people roll onto a gentle one.
There is also a gap that catches good skaters out. Knowing how to brake standing still is not the same as braking under stress, and the first time you need it will always be under stress. The technique you have only ever practised calm is not yet a technique you have.
The fix costs nothing: walk a new route before you roll it. You will feel a gradient with your legs that your eyes skipped over entirely.
