Almost Every Beginner Fall Has One Cause

Your weight drifts behind your wheels. Standing tall does it. Looking down at the floor does it. Fighting a wobble by straightening up does it, which is why fighting a fall is what puts you on your back. Bend your knees more than feels natural and keep your weight over your feet, and three separate problems stop being three problems.

Most beginner falls are not many different problems. They are one problem: your weight drifts behind your wheels.

Standing tall does it. Looking down at the floor does it. Feeling a wobble and straightening up to correct it does it — which is why fighting a fall is exactly what puts you on your back, on your tailbone or the back of your head.

The correction is one instruction, and it feels wrong at first: bend your knees more than seems natural, and keep your weight over your feet. Not over your heels. Over your feet.

Learn to recognise this one cause and three separate problems collapse into it — the first-day fall, the backwards roll that keeps stalling, the descent that feels uncontrollable. Same cause, same fix.
